From the NBA to Beach Volleyball in the Olympics

Chase Budinger’s Redemption Arc: From NBA Struggles to Olympic Glory in Beach Volleyball

Paris, July 29, 2024 – How about, let’s go Chase! In a breathtaking turn of events, Chase Budinger, a name once synonymous with the NBA, some might say a reserves narrative, has successfully transitioned to Olympic beach volleyball, erasing memories of his so called shaky basketball debut with a stunning performance in Paris. Partnering with Miles Evans, Budinger led the American duo to a straight-set victory over host France, igniting a dream that many believed was far-fetched only a few years ago.

Chase Budinger’s NBA basketball career ended primarily due to injuries and a decline in performance, particularly after a serious knee injury that required surgery in 2014. He played seven seasons in the NBA, mainly with the Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves, but after his last game in 2014 and a brief stint with the San Antonio Spurs in 2015, where he was waived before the season, he struggled to find consistent playing opportunities. This prompted him to pursue a new passion for beach volleyball, ultimately leading to his Olympic debut in 2024.

Budinger, is no stranger to the pressures of high-stakes competition. However, he candidly recalled his first-ever NBA game against the Portland Trail Blazers back in 2009, where nerves overwhelmed him, resulting in a dismal 0-for-2 shooting performance and an air ball that still haunts him. “It was a tough start,” Budinger reflected. “I was so nervous that I couldn’t focus. I remember feeling like the world was watching, and it showed in my gameplay.”

Fast forward to Monday, and the 35-year-old’s Olympic debut couldn’t have been more different. With the Eiffel Tower serving as a majestic backdrop, Budinger and Evans jumped to an early lead, winning the first set 21-14 and dominating the second 21-11, finishing the match in a swift 32 minutes. “It took me six years to achieve this goal,” Budinger beamed, his face lighting up with joy. “There’s no better feeling than competing on this stage, especially after the ups and downs of my basketball career.”

Utilizing the composure he learned from his time in the NBA, Budinger channeled his experiences to combat the familiar anxiety that had once derailed him. “On the bus ride here, I shared my nerves with Miles. But this time, instead of being paralyzed by them, I used them as motivation,” he said. “Getting a few points early on definitely helped relieve the pressure, and I was able to play my game without the weight of past failures hanging over me.”

Evans echoed Budinger’s sentiments, praising their chemistry on the court. “I had all these worst-case scenarios running through my head, but we came together and executed our plan,” he said. “To beat the home team in front of their fans is just incredible.”

While Budinger’s early basketball struggles could have defined his career, they instead paved the way for this remarkable transformation. His journey from the hardwood to the sand has not only rejuvenated his competitive spirit but has also ignited a passion for a sport he now embraces wholeheartedly. “I’ve learned that every setback is just a setup for a comeback,” Budinger noted, a grin spreading across his face.

The Olympics have a unique way of weaving tales of redemption, and Budinger’s is a perfect example of this narrative. With this triumphant victory, he not only begins his Olympic journey on a high note but also demonstrates that it’s never too late to chase your dreams, even if the path is unpredictable. Keep the House Packed and continue watching his journey!
