The Clemson football community is reeling from the tragic news of Diondre Overton’s untimely passing at the age of 26. The university announced the heartbreaking development on Saturday, September 7, 2024, sending shockwaves through the college football world.
Overton, a standout wide receiver for the Tigers from 2016 to 2019, was an integral part of Clemson’s national championship-winning teams in 2016 and 2018. During his collegiate career, he amassed impressive statistics, recording 52 receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns across 51 games.
The Greensboro, North Carolina native joined Clemson as a highly-touted four-star recruit in 2016. Throughout his time with the Tigers, Overton showcased his skills on the field and his leadership off it, earning the respect of teammates and coaches alike. In his senior year, he was voted a permanent team captain, highlighting his impact on the program.
After graduating from Clemson with a degree in sports communication in 2019, Overton pursued a professional career in football. He played in various leagues, including the United States Football League (USFL), where he spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Stars, recording 42 catches for 533 yards and five touchdowns.
The news of Overton’s passing has elicited an outpouring of grief and tributes from former teammates and the wider Clemson community. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, who played alongside Overton at Clemson, expressed his sorrow on social media, writing, “Brotha I miss you already man. I love you 5L….I’m hurting bad bout this right now. Rest Easy Big Play”.
